Currently, 1 in 4 youth in the US are diagnosed with a chronic medical condition including ADHD, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes. While hazardous for all youth, alcohol and other substance use has unique risks for this population who face the potential for negative alcohol interactions with medications and lab tests, treatment adherence, self-care and underlying disease status. We are planning a morning-long event to address Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) in populations of Youth with Chronic Medical Conditions as part of our SAMHSA training grant. In the first half of the morning, we hope to share data collected on the prevalence and implications of substance use in this population as well as perspectives of youth with chronic medical conditions collected in qualitative phone interviews. In the second half of the event, we will break up into small topic-focused groups and talk through case studies.
